From the outset, the conception and creation of  'A Voyage For Soldier Miles'  was to be an international collision of some of the finest music and acting talent in the world.

And it doesn't stop there.

This production is a living body of work that is constantly adapting to new methods of interactivity and presentation.

No longer does a comprehensive work of music and vision need to be considered a static relic mere moments after its release. The strength of this narrative is its ability to absorb new ideas from all over the world; ideas that befit the ever-changing landscape of entertainment in the 21st century.

MAKING 'A VOYAGE FOR SOLDIER MILES'

by MARK WARFORD

ONLY A SOLDIER WILL WITNESS humanity’s true and naked emotion. Time and time again.

I wanted to honor that journey through the eyes of a returning soldier. At a time when so many people live with war and poverty and injustice as nothing more than a scroll along the bottom of their TV's. There's no bandwagon to jump on here. But there is a stage from which to shout. My hope is that this message remains clear amidst the barrage of a world imploding.

Our world is great. Let's do better.

To avoid any confusion, right out of the gate, this is not a “ready, kids? 5, 6, 7, 8…” musical. The actors won’t sing, and the singers, bless ‘em, promise not to act. En masse though, everyone will perform powerfully, with passion and grace, and bring to life a story that is deeply relevant to the world we live in.

We are colliding an album, a book, a movie and a live stage performance in such a way that you will be able to experience the event across multiple channels and in multiple environments. Whether you're seated in a historical city square; ensconced in the warmth of a grand theatre; having your senses overloaded by a big-screen, cinematic, ‘popcorn’ ride; couch surfing in front of the plasma on a rainy day; cuddled up under a blanket beneath the stars; listening to the audio while held captive behind a string of blinking taillights or reclining on a ‘red-eye’ to who-knows-where clutching a glowing rectangle of light, you will have embarked upon a journey you will never forget.

THE PERFECT COMPANION FOR THOSE IN NEED OF A LITTLE 'AWAY' TIME...

And regardless of how you experience ‘A Voyage For Soldier Miles’, you can be assured that we are putting a heartwarming story and amazing music ahead of every other detail. Quality counts; inspirational performances count. This is an event that will send a shiver down your spine and send a smile into your heart.

You’re interested now, aren’t you?

Actually, for a little context, you might want to haul out your big speakers or slip on the Bose or Beats and slide the volume up on a preview of the DRAMATIZED ALBUM or the INDIVIDUAL SONGS and let a little of our world ease into yours.

We'll be right here when you're ready to read on...

TAMING THE BEAST / FIGHTING THE MUSE

OK.., let me assume my ‘earnest’ tone for a moment.  Everyday we grapple with our own version of the unpredictable moral compass. It spins relentlessly inside each and everyone of us - the rights; the wrongs; the “should I?”; the“why me?”; and most of all, the “why not me?”

None of us are immune to these feelings, so why not turn that struggle into a storyline? Why not use these shared experiences as the basis for reflecting a message of unity across the airwaves? Quite simply, if we acknowledge each other with dignity and respect, we offer a wonderful gift to each other, and sooner or later that’s gotta spread some love to where it’s needed the most.

That was the conception. All that remained was to get these rather lofty ideas into some sort of fighting shape.

THE BLANK SHEET OF PAPER

The project began in earnest with the writing of one song: ‘You Win Me’. I wanted to grapple with the notion of being taken advantage of and turn it upside down. I wanted to write a piece of music that reflected how displays of compassion and generosity and caring, for all of their inherent value, are often treated as an afterthought, rather than a force that’s at its best and most powerful when it’s infused into every act we perform. I was intrigued by the idea that the purposeful exhibition of these attributes should make the world deserving of YOU, rather than vice versa.

A few days later, I heard the playback of 'You Win Me' and realized the song, even in its rudimentary form, served as a fitting framework for telling a bigger story - and it was worth telling on a bigger stage. This is how the story begins:

A VOYAGE FOR SOLDIER MILES (SCRIPT EXCERPT)

NARRATOR:

"From space, Earth is quiet. Sound, commanding neither volume nor tone, rests eloquently at the feet of pure imagination. The cries of wildlife; an ocean’s crashing wave; the industrial symphony of the modern age - what is born on this planet, is bound by this planet.

This, is our world.

From space, Earth is Alive. A morass of extraordinary, excitable lifeforms, infinite in their enterprise, exploding into motion beneath a whirling shroud of ice and water vapor.

This, is your world.

From space, Earth is a promise. The defender of life; the coming of age; and a dream fulfilled.

This, is home."

THE STORY

‘A Voyage For Soldier Miles’ is a story of conflict. It’s about our world and our legacy, and it’s a journey of discovery - an awakening to a powerful, invisible and universal force our world has held secret since time began.

Carried around the world for millennia on currents of air and water, the sounds of generations of tears has been unlocked. As Earth’s atmosphere remains the guardian of these truths, three characters, representing the soul, frustration and idealism of humanity, will take you on a journey around the world and into your heart.

By the characters’ own admissions, we learn that everything is necessary - pleasure and pain; joy and remorse, and it’s from these often fractured experiences that we evolve stronger and wiser. We also learn that the planet has a voice and is the keeper of many secrets, but these truths are only exposed if we renew our ability to listen.

As the story progresses, it becomes clear that the weight of the dialogue also inhabits the personas of the musicians - their alter egos, if you like. This has been a particularly difficult (yet ultimately very rewarding) aspect of the writing process, as I needed to achieve this without compromising the flow of the story because we are not replicating the characters' presence in form or costume across every version.

WHO ARE THESE CHARACTERS, AND WHY SHOULD WE CARE?

As the tale unfolds, we are introduced to Miles, a man that walks heavy on the road of every returning soldier; Ramsey, a headstrong, reclusive scientist, and the beautiful, mystical, Ayita.

The story is set at a time when our world has become irrevocably divided and reflects only a faint echo of the grace and harmony humanity is capable of. Miles and Ramsey - strangers in a harsh environment, and most likely adversaries in a previous life, share in a magnificent and soul-stirring sonic discovery that has the potential to impact this sullen and confused existence. It soon becomes clear that these individuals have been set in motion along a path that is alive with conflict and purpose; a voyage deep inside our world’s moral conscience.

From the depths of space to the confines of a beating heart, ‘A Voyage For Soldier Miles’ presents a visual backdrop of the cacophony of war; cultures in transition; and the severity of natural world events. The stark, powerful and often foreboding imagery on display throughout this journey is contrasted and punctuated with sequences of staggering beauty and optimism as the story unfolds to its dramatic and immersive conclusion.

THE CHARACTERS:

MILES

Miles wears intolerance on his sleeve. He yearns for the day when justice is no longer selective. He stands tall and strong next to a powerful motorcycle. Shoulder length hair, dark as the shadows of twilight, frames a face that is set in a permanent frown. His eyes are clear and green and incredibly alive with the light of stars. He has been embroiled in fights of one sort or another his entire life, and now, by his own admission, clings to his wanderlust with a sense of purpose, if not salvation. Despite the wondrous sites he has beheld in his travels, he finds with each passing day that his compassion, once so vibrant and alive, fades more and more.

This sense of fragility reflects one side of the double-edged sword he hoists in defense of his character. On the other, a determined spirit, constantly searching, seeks internal redemption with every turn of his wheels.

RAMSEY

Ramsey is not conspicuously tall; his features are striking but not conspicuously handsome. His hair is silver, wiry and brushed backward from the temples. He carries himself gracefully - like a boxer. His eyes don’t seem to blink often enough, as if he must penetrate your soul to really communicate with you. His smile, when present, is very broad and somewhat unnerving.

In the world of science, he is a genius; a man that has labored for many years against an unyielding tide of greed and politics, working tirelessly to expose the harsh truth of humanity’s behavior. As a doctor, he has witnessed unspeakable horrors; as a leader of humanitarian causes, he has become a commanding voice on issues of global compassion and human rights. But no reward of privilege, or position, repaired him for the constant weight of intolerance he bore. No matter how much he gave, the world took more - more hope; more pain; more lives. This insatiable appetite left him exhausted and confused and, inevitably, purposefully, he forsake his family, succumbing only to an inexplicable, driving need to create a legacy that would resonate far beyond his living memory. Although he is a man of immense courage and extraordinary vision, Ramsey bears the youthful scars of a quick and ruthless temperament. Finding that seclusion now best serves his demeanor, he has forsworn all ties with his contemporaries, extricating himself from their world of placation and self interest; immeasurably frustrated with their inability to keep pace with his impatience.

AYITA

Her face evokes nobility. Her skin is flawless and her eyes portray wisdom beyond her years. She is astonishingly beautiful. Ayita’s long, dark hair cascades around her like black smoke, curling and moving of its own volition as her white, silken cloak glides about her as if completely weightless.

Ayita is a commanding presence when faced with a challenge. Her stance at the edge of the abyss is proud and calm. She is aware of her gift, but she is human. Frailty and strength are as familiar to her as the elements she commands. That Miles and Ramsey appear before her now; at this time, validates her surrender to the darkness she holds within. She too has succumbed to a journey.

WHAT ARE 'EARTH SOUNDS'?

One of the key components of ‘A Voyage For Soldier Miles’, and one of the most enjoyable to be immersed in, is the development of the soundscape. Sometime ago, in a land far, far away (OK, it’s Sweden.., but you know what I mean), the renowned sonic and visual artist, leif .e. boman happened upon a discovery that has enriched and amazed hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world.

Working in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Program and the embassies of every member country, his proprietary sound compositions, ‘Earth Sounds’, are derived from the elements and minerals of the natural world. Utilizing Emission Spectroscopy, boman adapts waveforms of light into sonic frequencies. Out of volcanic ash, concrete dust, water, microbes, moon rocks, etc., boman gives a voice to oceans, deserts, mountains, urban landscapes, environments of great beauty and sites of devastation and untold suffering.

As the mineral composition in the earth differs greatly depending upon the location, so do the resulting sounds. The artists has collected earth samples from 203 countries, including all 193 UN countries and 4 territories. He has made sound recordings of all of them. The earth sound recordings are ‘stored’ as digital sound bytes - which means that they can be applied as sound sources for modern electronic musical instruments such as samplers, synthesizers, sequencers, etc.

This means that now, for the first time, a cinematic sound design will have a relevance that has never before been experienced. So much so, that the sounds themselves anchor a vital aspect of the storyline. And with a sonic impact that can literally shake a building to its foundation, the merging of traditional music compositions and boman’s ‘Earth Sounds’ is ultimately breathtaking.

To experience their real impact, slip on some headphones and check out the opening and closing sections of ‘Cumulus / Rising’. When, after listening, you realize that the sounds were constructed from blood-soaked soil gathered in a Kabul soccer stadium by the daughter of a Taliban-executed mother for an unfounded crime, I can guarantee you will be prompted into thoughts you might otherwise have never contemplated.

CULTURE AND LANGUAGE

From the outset, we have been adamant that the finished project should cross cultural and language boundaries with equal amounts of passion and entertainment value. The entire narrative (dialogue, songs and narration) will be available at launch in five languages - English, Spanish, French, Mandarin and Arabic - with more to follow.

So there you have it. Stay tuned.   MW.
